Leaving New York: access and paperwork

  • Building rules. Many New York City buildings require a certificate of insurance (COI) from your mover and a reserved elevator time. Share these requirements with every mover before they quote.
  • Truck access. If a full-size truck cannot park near your building, ask whether a shuttle or long carry is included or billed separately.
  • Shorter distance, same rules. Because the move crosses state lines, it is regulated by the FMCSA. Check the mover's U.S. DOT number before you book.

Arriving in North Carolina

  • Shared loads. On mid-length routes, your belongings may travel on a truck with other customers' shipments. Ask whether your move is a dedicated or shared load, and how that affects the delivery window.
  • Vehicles and driver's licenses. New residents must transfer their driver's license and vehicle registration within set deadlines. Check the current rules with the North Carolina DMV.
  • Weather. Hurricane season on the Atlantic coast runs from June through November. If you are moving in that period, ask your mover how it handles weather delays.

Before you book a mover for this move

  1. Check the mover's federal registration. A move from New York to North Carolina crosses state lines, so the mover must be registered with the FMCSA. Here is how to check.
  2. Get at least three written estimates, each based on a survey of your belongings, in person or by video.
  3. Compare the same estimate type. Learn the difference between binding and non-binding estimates.
  4. Choose your liability coverage on purpose. Released Value pays at most 60 cents per pound per article.
  5. Know the warning signs. Read our list of moving scam red flags before you pay any deposit.
